I like how bold your painting is. The body seems to be sitting in a very awkward position though. And I have to ask - What is that thing on top of the pile of books on the right?
The picture is a portrait of my brother. He loves to read fantasy and he loves robotics. The creature in the upper right hand corner is supposed to be a mesh of the to interests he has.
Yeah the awkward position bugs me too, I had created the piece with a different horizone line originally. But I decided to change the viewpoint to be a little higher. in doing so everything else is in intuitive perspective except for the boy. I did try moving him up a little but it destroyed the feel I was going for.
Great bold values. I really like that. Unlike tusen, I am not a fan of the smudgy style. It works on his hair, and the face doesn't seem smudgy, but I really dislike how the books look. It may just be personal taste but it makes me not want to look at the illustration any more. Do you always do the smudgy thing?
I usually do my pieces a little sharper. But all the ones I have posted so far are more of a quick study than anything that I would really hand in as a portfolio piece

this is really great! I like the smudgy style and the fact that it's black and white
